Boy o boy, how I dreaded this question when I was at school, What do you want to be when you are older? It’s like society is asking you to grow up before your time. Childhood is supposed to be innocent, and although I know that it is good to set goals, it just seems pointless to question what a 10 year old wants to do.It is nearly never something they will actually become.
Here is why I hated this question? I honestly didn’t have a clue what the hell I was doing already, let alone when i’m older, as you know society and technology changes every year. Here is why I still don’t know what I want to be. I enjoy a lot of things and to just stick to one thing would seem pointless, I also get bored very quickly. That is why I feel the term ‘entrepreneur’ works great for people like me, that just want to get out there and experience every aspect of life. That’s not to say I want to do everything, it just means that I don’t really know what I want to be, apart from have life on my own terms.
Here is why you can also have life on your own terms, if you do not fit in this criteria of knowing what you want to be:
1. You don’t have to know your exact future and job, the fun is in the journey..
Have you noticed that people rush into their future, because they see life as a race, to get to somewhere but they don’t get it. You never know what is around the corner, you could focus on something and stress yourself out extremely and try and achieve something as fast as possible without stopping and then something happens which you just did not expect.
My grandparents grew up in a farm and lived there all their lives until they died at age 75, they didn’t really adhere to society’s rules of life to work work work and stress themselves out. They just lived their lives as they saw fit, and did not worry about unnecessary things and they lived a good and long life. You will most likely never end up where you expected because life happens. So just live in the now.
2. Start something small that you enjoy, and with passion it will turn into something profitable
Entrepreneurs are people whom want to live life on their own terms right? The whole point is to make enough money in something you enjoy and then just enjoy the rest of your life without being boggled in a cubicle for the rest of your life. The cubicle 9-5 job is something which I personally don’t think I’d enjoy but I do want to experience just so I know I’ve made the right decision.
You can start something small now, whilst you are doing whatever you are doing in life, whether that is design, writing, film making, just start it, you’ll see that as you spend one day on it at a time, it soon becomes something big, just as a house is laid brick by brick, so is a business that you enjoy.
3. The best commodity a person can have in life is patience..
The best advice I have ever been given by a businessman is just to be patient, things happen but they won’t happen if you force them. Just work well, and enjoy your life day to day, hour to hour, make your life something that you enjoy. This is not to say quit your job and be happy, just make happiness work for you. You can choose to be patient or you can choose to be angry.
This is something which you must take and look into in-depth. History and well known people have taught us that we must remember that nothing good happens overnight, the best success is success which is made over a long time frame, it is something which is gradual and patience will help you achieve this. Remember, next time you reach a halt in your life or a hard decision just think ‘patience’, sleep on it, think about it and then make a logical decision.
What do you want to be when you are older? Maybe yourself..
